How does balanitis appear?

There can be reddening edema of prepuce and penis enlargement. Children also sometimes can feel sharp pain, burning during urination, itch, discomfort, balanus discharge.

Normally there is smegma on a balanus. Smegma is a curdy mass, secretion of balanus sebaceous glands, which is a fruitful nutrient medium for microorganisms. During balanitis, the discharge becomes much more profuse. And as a rule parents say that pus discharges from the balanus!

What are the causes of its development?

The factors that contribute to the development of this disease are the following:

1. Permanent or temporary absence of hygienic procedures.If hygiene of genitals is not observed, smegma starts to accumulate, and the latter is a fruitful medium for any infection.
2. Phimosis is constriction of external prepuce opening. During phimosis the balanus either doesn't appear at all or can be hardly opened, thus complicating hygienic procedures, and this consequently may cause balanitis.
3. The finest skin a man has is on a balanus and internal side of a prepuce. There is a great probability to mechanically traumatize balanus and prepuce skin by underwear when a person moves.
4. Discharge of sweat and sebaceous glands, urethral discharge, drops of urine with salt crystals form smegma which accumulates in preputial pouch impairs protective functions of skin and is an excellent nutrition for microbes.

The reasons of balanitis can also be:

1. Violation of hygienic procedures
2. Genital trauma
3. Chemical fret in case of self-treatment
4. Mechanical trauma by underwear.
